Leon Hemme T. SM2
Served aboard '59 -'62
Fort Collins - Mr.
Leon Terry Hemme found everlasting peace on Easter Sunday, April 4th, 2021. He
was 80 years old when he was freed from a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
Mr. Hemme was born into a small farming community just outside of Luverne,
Minnesota, about 200 miles South of Minneapolis. He was the youngest of five.
When he was 10 years old, his family moved to nearby Pipestone, MN where he went
on to finish High School and join the United States Navy. He spent several years
in S.E. Asia and the Pacific during the Vietnam War, first assigned to the U.S.S.
Hull and then the U.S.S. Kittyhawk. He served as a Communications Specialist
aboard both. Leon was a proud veteran who loved his country.
After his very Honorable Discharge from the Navy, Mr. Hemme worked in the
Airline Industry for many years, and went on to serve our government at both the
State and Federal levels. During this time, he and his family lived in the
Aurora/Denver area, eventually relocating to Fort Collins, Colorado. He was a
lifelong fan of the Minnesota Vikings, and became a fan of the Broncos as well.
After retirement, Leon went on to be a Volunteer Courier for Poudre Fire
Authority. He was an active member of the V.F.W. and American Legion and
attended several Navy Reunions over many years. Mr. Hemme loved to spend his
free time hiking, biking, and fishing; you could usually find his beloved dog
Fred by his side. He was a true animal lover at heart.
He is survived by his wife and partner of 47 years, Gail; their daughter
Jennifer Hemme and son Terry (Liliana) Hemme; and his Pride and Joy...his 2
grandsons William and Jack. All of his immediate family live locally and were
blessed to be by his side throughout his struggle. Mr. Hemme also has 2
brothers, several cousins, nieces, and nephews living in Colorado, across the
U.S. and abroad.
A celebration of life with Military Honors and Flag Presentation will be held by
his family and friends this summer. His family would like to thank all the
wonderful staff at Brookdale Fort Collins, as well as Pathways Hospice for all
their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, please Honor Mr. Hemme by
contributing to the
Alzheimer's Association or any animal welfare organization of your choice.
