The purpose of this updated guide is:
To assist families as they prepare for the eventuality of the service memberís or spouseís death.
To assist the survivors in settling the affairs of the deceased retiree and preparing for their future lives.
The guide is designed to support the Family Preparation and Survivor Assistance Support program initiated by DAV Chapter 123 in 2013.
Whereas the military generally provides survivor assistance to the next of kin of all deceased service members when they die on active duty or after retirement, this booklet covers a broader range of typical survivor assistance issues that veterans and families encounter. This guide and worksheet package is designed to assist veterans and their families in:
a) notification of appropriate agencies of the death of a veteran and
b) obtaining available benefits from the Veterans Administration (VA), Defense Finance and Accounting Services (DFAS), and Social Security
